Today’s reality and work environment is vastly different than what was typical just 30-60 days ago. Right now, without the structure of the office setting, we all need to conduct ourselves like an entrepreneur — work from the home office, think independently, video conference calls/meetings, and most importantly, organize our day-to-day activities.
In situations like this, my obsessive-compulsive tendencies come in handy! My first task was to set up my home office space to work for me and me alone. I like to think of it as CK’s feng shui to style, confidence, and success. It’s important for me to make sure my personal style is consistent in all areas of my work/home life.
Here are some helpful tips to make your current work environment work for you:
1: Get Up - Don’t Get Lazy.
Keep your morning routine and continue to get up at 5am — just like you would when working out of the office. Stick to your morning routines: emails, work out, set goals, and prepare for your daily tasks. It’s easy to hit the snooze button so don’t fall into this trap! I have a daily invite with my clients called Coffee With CK. This video conference meeting over a cup of joe is a perfect way to start the day while engaging with current, new, and potential clients.
2: Get Dressed & Dress For Success.
You know me... I prioritize my physical appearance. I outline my business attire for the upcoming week on each prior Sunday. This is an important part of my weekly planning process and aligns with my weekly goals and objectives. Doing so increases my overall confidence. I definitely understand the temptation to fall back into college days and lounge around in sweatpants and an oversized t-shirt. Nostalgic? Sure, but don't succumb to temptation and stick with your normal business attire. Be better than that — and dress to impress.
3 & 4: Define Office Hours & Organize Your Day.
Set your office hours. These boundaries help you allocate your time to ensure goal completion each day. Organize your day in some manner. Whether you prefer setting up the night before or early in the morning, continue to keep your structured routine. Block off specific time to attack your inbox, follow-up, prospect, and set appointments with your clients and coworkers. For those of us working home with kids, I recommend you block off family time. Doing so helps my kids understand that Daddy is still working, albeit from home.
5: Take A Deep Breath & Enjoy the New Norm.
Now that you’re well dressed, organized, and tackling your daily task in your new home office, don’t forget to take some time to relax and breathe. I understand we’re all affected by the recent pandemic, but try not to get too stressed out. That’s easier said than done, I know! Just remember, incorporating these 5 tips into your daily routine will allow you to kick a$ once we’re back to normalcy. Now do it with me — take a deep breath.
